MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI 1.5 Tesla)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to investigate the anatomy and physiology of the body in both health and disease.

CT SCAN

A 'computerized tomography' (CT) (or 'computerized axial tomography' (CAT) scan) uses a computer that takes data from several X-ray images of structures inside a human's or animal's body and converts them into pictures on a monitor.

A CT scanner uses digital geometry processing to generate a 3-dimensional (3D) image of the inside of an object.

CT scanner emits a series of narrow beams through the human body as it moves through an arc, unlike an X-ray machine which sends just one radiation beam. The final picture is far more detailed than an X-ray image.
Inside the CT scanner there is an X-ray detector which can see hundreds of different levels of density. It can see tissues inside a solid organ. This data is transmitted to a computer, which builds up a 3D cross-sectional picture of the part of the body and displays it on the screen. Sometimes a contrast dye is used because it enhances the clarity of the image on the screen.

PMS has in place a 128 slice CT scan machine from Siemens which is a high-end CT scanner that delivers economical benefits without compromising on patient care with the following features:

DIGITAL X-RAY

Digital radiography is a form of X-ray imaging, where digital X-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images.
Digital radiography systems from Siemens as is available at PMS are as individual as your X-ray routine, cover virtually all clinical applications, and offer you workflow optimization.

FLUOROSCOPY

When the X-ray beam is used with a video screen, the technique is called fluoroscopy. This allows physicians to visualize the movement of a body part or of an instrument or dye (contrast agent) through the body in real time.

Fluoroscopy studies such as the upper gastrointestinal series are popular to evaluate patients with suspected gastroesophageal reflux and other problems such as swallowing difficulty.
Fluoroscopy is used in a wide variety of examinations and procedures to diagnose or treat patients. Some examples are:

 

  • Barium X-rays and enemas (to view the gastrointestinal tract
  • Catheter insertion and manipulation (to direct the movement of a catheter through blood vessels, bile ducts or the urinary system)
  • Placement of devices within the body, such as stents (to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels)
  • Angiograms (to visualize blood vessels and organs)
  • Orthopedic surgery (to guide joint replacements and treatment of fractures) etc.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

PMS is one of the rare diagnostic centers’ that have a dedicated fluoroscopy machine for investigations as are mentioned above because of our quest for excellence in service delivery.

 


 

MAMMOGRAPHY

Digital mammography is the most technologically advanced equipment available for the early detection of breast abnormalities. Early detection provides the best chance to treat breast cancer successfully. With the use of digital technology, screening mammograms can now be performed within 10 to 12 minutes. Images are obtained and stored electronically, thereby allowing them to be viewed at either location. Electronic storage eliminates lost films.

PMS has been certified to have currently the best mammography equipment in Nigeria by the NRSA.

4D SONOGRAPHY, COLOR DOPPLER

An ultrasound scan, also referred to as a sonogram, diagnostic sonography, and ultrasonography is a device that uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of some part of the inside of the body, such as the stomach, liver, heart, tendons, muscles, joints and blood vessels.

It can also be used to monitor an unborn baby, diagnose a condition, or guide a surgeon during certain procedures.

Ultrasound is the examination of choice in obstetrics. It is used to determine the age, level of development of the fetus and the presence of birth defects or other potential problems.
It is also the examination of choice in young women with pelvic pain and in patients with suspected gallbladder problems.

Ultrasound is useful to study blood flow in larger arteries. It is commonly used to search for abnormal narrowing of the carotid arteries and to monitor aneurysms of the abdominal aorta.

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

Echocardiography, also called an echo test or heart ultrasound, is a test that takes “moving pictures” of the heart with sound waves. Echocardiography uses standard two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound to create images of the heart. You don’t have to stay in the hospital. It’s not surgery and doesn’t hurt.

Why do I need an echo test?
Your doctor may use an echo test to look at your heart’s structure and check how well your heart is working.
This test may be needed if...

  • You have a heart murmur.
  • You’ve had a heart attack.
  • You have unexplained chest pains.
  • You’ve had rheumatic fever.
  • You have a congenital heart defect.

  • The size and shape of your heart
